Music sharing was a ritual that the team thoroughly enjoyed. Sharing songs with friends, family and loved ones. But it can sometimes get lost in translation in our busy lives.

Why try to improve this ritual?

Music is such an important thing for us in some of our lives, it helps us make sense of the world, overcome challenging moments but yet can also bring us joy and happiness. Music can touch us deeply but what if it can touch us even more? How can we elevate that with with personal moments and unique interactions?

Our device / concept was still in its initial stage, and we had created a prototype out of cardboard.

It included a speaker, and hologram feature that displayed the song along with the sender's favorite part.

With our second iteration, we began to flesh out the product's aesthetic and design interactions.

During the third iteration, we aimed to enhance the user experience by placing the speakers outside the device.

We felt having the speakers inside the device would not deliver the best music listening experience.

Prototype #1

Prototype #1

Our initial attempt involved creating a cardboard prototype with the intention of incorporating holographic visuals to elevate the music experience when a song was shared to the device.

However, the interactions proved to be subpar and far from intuitive and lacked an emotional response that we were striving for.

The fact that we didn't immediately strike gold showed us about what we wanted to avoid.

Prototype number 2 drew inspiration from the concept of fireflies caught in a jar. In this design, the device would 'hold' music that had been sent to the user. When a song was sent, a light would illuminate to signal that there was a song waiting. Pressing down on the device would then activate the speakers, playing the waiting song.

To enable interactive controls, we employed two Arduino boards, each linked to separate LED light strips, and utilized Processing code to program them for light effects and user communication, with the pulsing base conveying information and the glowing dome enhancing the music listening experience.

In order to share a great song with friends, we felt that it's important to also be able to mark your favourite part. In the friends section, assigning colors to your friends enables easy recognition of their recommendations solely through visual effects on the physical device.
